Having decided on a tow vehicle now we need to work out what to tow!!
I always found it funny when you see someone towing a massive trailer down the highway and you wonder why they need such a big trailer. Well now I understand how you end up in that situation.
Its like most things in life you set off with a basic idea of what you want then you start looking at options and your brain goes “That is a clever idea”, then you go “That would be nice to have” eventually ending up on the “We really need that”. Next thing you know you are looking at 30ft trailers with multiple slide-outs and weighing in at 10,000 lbs.
So our initial criteria for a trailer was:
- Double bed
- Some sort of kitchen
- Toilet but not necessarily a shower
- Somewhere to sit but could be a dinette/bed
Off to the RV Dealerships we went and climbed in and out of every small trailer they had. After seeing 20 or 30 different trailers we eventually changed or refined our criteria to this:
- Queen sized bed that my feet don’t hang out the end of (I am 6′ 3″ tall)
- Bed that is permanently down, so no Murphy beds
- Bed that either of us can get out of without having to climb over the person. So basically bed facing up/down the trailer not across it
- Some kind of nightstand to put stuff like phones for charging, etc. So nearby power sockets too
- Full size fridge and freezer
- Stove top with minimum of 2 burners
- Microwave and oven so you could at least do a crispy baked potato
- Reasonable space for prepping food
- Good storage, well thought out storage that makes good use of the available space
- I really don’t need 3 mounting points for a TV or an outside TV mount
- Good outdoor storage for camp chairs, BBQ, etc.
- AC and a furnace is a given considering the temperature difference between seasons here
- Toilet I can sit on (Remember I am 6′ 3″) and so many toilets are crammed next to a cupboard that you have to sit sideways to fit
- If it has a shower at least tall enough for me to stand in even if I am touching the roof
- Under 7000lbs when loaded with stuff
We have not yet made a decision on the trailer yet but the one that sticks out the most as suitable for us and meets our criteria (even though it actually probably still a step too far) is the 2025 Keystone Bullet Classic 1840RB.
