So having a nice shiny new truck the question of whether we put a tonneau cover on the back comes up. For the bulk of the time we own this truck we are going to be driving it as a daily run about so a tonneau cover makes sense:
- Stops the back filling up with snow which we would then need to dig out
- Can store stuff int he back without it getting covered in snow
- Can store stuff in the back that won’t get blown out when driving
- Reduces drag (night not really make much difference)
- Looks nicer
For when we are towing or taking the bikes or moving big stuff:
- Tonneau cover reduces the usable space in the back
- Bed bike racks have to fit under it
- They are not cheap and there a hundreds of different designs to choose from
- Certain designs block the back window when they are open
Tonneau covers come in many different forms:
Soft roll-up tonneau covers
- Lightweight and budget-friendly, offering easy access to the truck bed
Hard roll-up tonneau covers
- Provide durable protection with built-in locking mechanisms for added security
Soft folding tonneau covers
- Feature a tri-fold design, allowing convenient and flexible access to the truck bed
Hard folding tonneau covers
- Made from durable materials, offering strong security and load-carrying capacity
Retractable tonneau covers
- Offer a modern look and flexible access, retracting into a canister at the front of the bed
Hinged tonneau covers
- Open like a car trunk, providing high security and excellent weather protection
Snap tonneau covers
- Attach with snaps, offering an affordable and lightweight option for light-duty use
Toolbox tonneau covers
- Integrate a toolbox with a cover, ideal for professionals needing secure tool storage
Each has its benefits and draw back, so again off to Google to read a million reviews and to Copilot for descriptions and summaries. also asking everyone I knew with a truck on what they got.
In the end we decided on a hard rollup tonneau, which is basically a heavy duty vinyl cover that has many smaller crossbars inside that give it strength and rigidity so it can support a load (or a pile of snow) without getting pushed into the truck bed. Also the one we chose has a clever locking mechanism that when you close it locks the sides down so you have a safe place to put stuff.
