Today turned into a practical sort of day—both Georgie and I were overdue for haircuts. We spent most of the morning catching up on phone calls and updating the blog, then headed into Truro in search of someone willing to tackle both men’s and women’s cuts. Google pointed us to a First Choice Haircutters, and despite the mixed reviews, the need to shed some hair won out. With my low‑risk hairstyle, there wasn’t much they could get wrong anyway. In the end it worked out perfectly: we were in and out in half an hour, both looking far more presentable. Even Georgie was happy with her cut, and the best part was that it didn’t cost anything close to the $100‑plus she’d pay back home.
From there we swung by Walmart to pick up a cordless hand vacuum for the trailer—something to keep the daily grass, dust, and snack debris under control. We left with a compact little Shark unit and headed into town for food.
Lunch was a simple salad at Freshii, followed by a quick tour around the town centre and then a stop at Starbucks for iced coffees.
With the afternoon wide open, we drove along the North Shore to “That Dutchman’s Cheese Farm,” a small Gouda‑focused cheese factory with a wonderfully eclectic Dutch‑themed gift shop. We happily lost an hour poking around and emerged with a small box of treats, including some excellent cheese.
Since we were only about twenty minutes from Five Islands Beach, we decided to return for an afternoon walk and a bit of beachcombing. The tide was in this time, leaving us a much smaller stretch of beach to explore, but we still managed to spend a couple of hours hunting for interesting stones and loading our pockets until they were noticeably heavier.

For supper, I finally tried one of the bison steaks we’d picked up during our stay at the bison farm before Cape Breton. It turned out beautifully—tender, flavourful, served with a simple salad and paired with a glass of red wine. A solid end to a pleasantly unhurried day.
