A long‑ago promise to report back on the homemade bike rack finally comes due—8,000 km into the trip, I can say it’s been working really well. Ironically, now that I’ve managed to wreck my thumb, we probably won’t be putting many miles on the bikes for the rest of the journey, but the rack itself has earned its keep.
The crossbar with the fork mounts slots neatly into the truck bed, and with the tonneau rolled up the bikes sit well forward and stay solidly in place. Even with the tailgate ladder added into the mix, both bikes still fit, their front wheels secured to the frames with simple Velcro straps. It’s a tidy setup, and for the distance we’ve covered, it’s done exactly what it was built to do.
