As this was the first of five longer driving days to catch up, we were up early and—miraculously—on the road by 9 a.m. A world record for us. The downside was the smoke from the forest fires that had blown in overnight; it was so thick it made your eyes itch and your throat sore.

We’re pretty sure we missed some beautiful views as the road wound around the lakes at water level, but with the smoke it was hard to tell what was scenery and what was haze. After about 170 km the air finally began to clear, and our lunchtime stop wasn’t too bad at all.

We rolled into our first night’s camp around 5:30 p.m., with just over 560 km behind us.
